The old oaks and specimen trees that define your property can't be replaced in a lifetime. Conservative, ISA-certified care keeps mature trees healthy, safe, and standing for as long as possible.
Atlanta is "the city in a forest" for a reason — towering willow oaks, white oaks, tulip poplars, and southern magnolias that have stood for 80, 100, even 150 years. These mature and heritage trees are irreplaceable. They anchor your landscape, shade your home, support wildlife, and add real value to your property — and no amount of money can buy back the decades it took to grow them. Escamilla Tree Service specializes in keeping these trees alive and safe, with a philosophy of preserve first, remove only as a last resort.
Mature trees need a fundamentally different approach than young or mid-life trees. Their wound-healing slows, their tolerance for heavy pruning drops, and the consequences of a mistake are permanent. Our ISA Certified Arborists practice conservative, evidence-based care designed to reduce risk and extend life — not aggressive cutting that hastens decline.
Worried an old tree might be dangerous? Before assuming it has to come down, get an ISA Certified Arborist's opinion. Many "scary" mature trees can be retained safely with targeted pruning and support hardware. We'll give you an honest assessment — call (404) 426-8613.
Most mature-tree decline we see is caused by well-intentioned but harmful practices. We never do these — and we'll steer you away from them:
An ISA Certified Arborist assesses the tree's health, structure, decay, root zone, and risk — and determines whether preservation is the right path.
You get a plan focused on the minimum effective intervention: crown cleaning, selective reduction, cabling if needed — never heavy cutting. Clear written pricing.
Skilled climbers work the tree by hand with proper rigging to protect both the tree and your property, then clean up completely.
Get an honest preservation assessment before anyone tells you to cut it down.
📞 Call (404) 426-8613Far more often than people assume, mature trees can be preserved. Many trees that look dangerous have correctable issues — a heavy limb that can be reduced, a crack that can be cabled, deadwood that can be cleaned out. We only recommend removal when a tree poses an unmanageable risk or is in irreversible decline. The first step is an honest arborist evaluation.
Mature trees heal slowly and tolerate far less live-wood removal. The goal shifts from shaping and training to maintenance and risk reduction — mostly crown cleaning (deadwood) and modest, selective reduction. Heavy pruning that a young tree shrugs off can push an old tree into decline, so we prune conservatively.
Cabling and bracing are support systems — flexible cables high in the canopy or threaded rods through weak unions — that reduce the chance of limb or stem failure. Properly installed, they don't harm the tree and can let you keep a valuable tree that would otherwise need removal. We assess whether your tree is a good candidate.
Most construction damage happens to the roots, out of sight. Trenching, grading, soil compaction from equipment, and paving over the root zone can kill a mature tree slowly over several years. If you're building or landscaping near a big tree, we can set up a tree protection zone and a pruning plan before work begins.
Not necessarily. Trees are remarkably good at compartmentalizing decay, and many hollow trees stand safely for decades because the strength is in the outer wood. What matters is how much sound wood remains and where. An arborist assessment — sometimes with decay-detection tools — tells us whether a hollow tree is a hazard or simply old.
We recommend an arborist inspection every 1–2 years for high-value or high-target mature trees, plus a check after any major storm. Early detection is everything with old trees. A preventative maintenance plan handles this automatically.
It varies with the tree's size, access, and what's needed — crown cleaning is modest, while cabling or reduction on a large specimen costs more. In nearly every case it's a fraction of the value the tree adds to your property, and far less than removal plus replacement. You'll get a written estimate after the evaluation.
