DEVELOPMENTAL PRUNING
Nearly every catastrophic tree failure we get called out to across Alpharetta traces back to one root cause: weak structure that nobody corrected while the tree was still young. The Bradford pear that split down the middle after a June thunderstorm in a Windward subdivision, the water oak that dropped a codominant stem across a driveway off Haynes Bridge, the red maple that tore at a tight V-union during a microburst β almost all of it was avoidable with a handful of well-placed cuts made years earlier. Structural pruning is how those cuts get made at the right moment, and Escamilla Tree Service has been shaping sound, wind-worthy trees for Fulton County homeowners for more than 15 years.
Structural, or developmental, pruning steers a young or maturing tree toward strong architecture: a single dominant leader, scaffold branches spaced and attached the right way, and weight balanced through the canopy. It is the most cost-effective tree work there is β a small investment in a young dogwood, oak, or poplar that keeps paying back in safety and avoided expense for the next fifty years.
Alpharetta's growth pattern pushes this work to the front of the line. The master-planned subdivisions along Windward, Webb Bridge, and the GA-400 tech corridor are full of newly planted ornamentals and young shade trees, and the loblolly and shortleaf pines here shoot up fast. Get in early with light training cuts and those same trees stand up to north Fulton's storms instead of surrendering to them.
Our ISA Certified Arborists train trees away from the specific defects that turn into failures once the canopy gets big and the wind gets serious:
Everything we do follows ANSI A300 pruning standards. There is no topping, no heading, no guesswork β just deliberate cuts that guide growth:
Just planted a new tree, or have one under roughly 20 years old? This is the highest-leverage moment there is for structural pruning. A few short, inexpensive visits across the first decade can head off a five-figure failure later. Call (404) 426-8613 for a free assessment anywhere in Alpharetta.
An ISA Certified Arborist walks the tree and evaluates its age, species, leader, branch architecture, and defects, then maps out a long-term plan for how it should develop.
We make only the cuts the tree needs this season β leader selection, subordination, defect correction β every one following ANSI A300 standards. We never top.
Structural pruning happens in stages. We set a return cadence, usually every 2 to 3 years, to keep guiding the tree as it grows, and we clean up the site completely on every visit.
Timing matters as much as technique. In north Fulton the calendar looks like this:
A word on the older, larger specimens in your yard: some of Alpharetta's grand hardwoods may fall under the City of Alpharetta's tree ordinance. If your tree is a mature specimen and the work is significant, it is worth a quick check with the City of Alpharetta before you begin, and our arborists can help you sort out whether that applies.
Fast-growing and failure-prone species gain the most from early training, and north Fulton is full of them:

Escamilla Tree Service provided a very competitive estimate for our project. They were courteous, efficient and completed the project quickly. The price quoted included stump grinding which they did at the time of tree cutting and also removed the logs before they left.Posted on Google![]()

Why Escamilla
Regular tree trimming maintains an established tree β clearing deadwood, shaping the canopy, lifting limbs off the roof. Structural pruning trains a young or developing tree to grow strong architecture from the start: one dominant leader and well-spaced scaffold branches. It is proactive and developmental rather than maintenance work, and it heads off the structural failures that eventually bring mature trees down.
Ideally within the first few years after planting, then continued through about age 15 to 20. The earlier you begin, the smaller the cuts and the larger the long-term payoff. That said, plenty of maturing trees still benefit from structural correction β we will assess yours and tell you honestly whether it is a good candidate.
When two stems of similar size compete, the union between them is inherently weak, especially once bark gets pinched inside it. That union is the most common point of catastrophic failure when a north Fulton thunderstorm or microburst rolls through. Correcting it early by subordinating one stem is quick and inexpensive. Correcting it on a large mature water oak or Bradford pear is costly and sometimes impossible, which is exactly why so much of our storm risk reduction work starts with structure.
No, it is the opposite. Topping is indiscriminate, damaging, and something we never do. Structural pruning uses precise subordination and reduction cuts back to lateral branches, guiding growth without the decay, weak regrowth, and long decline that topping causes.
It is done in stages. Most young trees benefit from a visit every 2 to 3 years through their developmental years, with only a light amount of wood removed each time. We build a follow-up schedule so your tree is guided consistently as it grows β the same philosophy behind our preventative maintenance plans.
Fast-growing and failure-prone species gain the most: Bradford and other ornamental pears, water oaks, willow oaks, red maples, sweetgums, and our loblolly and shortleaf pines. But virtually any young shade or specimen tree, from a front-yard dogwood to a developing tulip poplar, grows stronger, safer structure with early training.
Because young trees are small and the cuts are light, individual visits are quite affordable β often a fraction of what mature-tree work runs. It is the best value in tree care. You will get a written estimate after a free assessment, with cost figures as clear ranges and no surprises. For older, protected trees, ask about mature tree preservation, and if your tree is a specimen it is worth a quick check with the City of Alpharetta before major work. Serving all of Fulton County.
