Dallas splits neatly into two kinds of tree job. Around the courthouse square and the older residential streets, the canopy is large, old hardwood - white oak, water oak, and hickory that has been standing a long time, often much closer to houses and power service than anyone would plant today. Water oak in particular is worth knowing about: it grows quickly, is widely planted across west Georgia, and tends to hollow from the centre while still looking healthy from the street. A water oak of any size over a structure deserves a proper look rather than a guess.
North and west of town, along Cedarcrest Road and out toward GA-61, the picture is completely different. That is where Paulding's growth has gone, and those subdivisions were timber a few years ago. The pines left standing between houses are the classic edge-exposure problem: tall, thin-stemmed, shallow-rooted, and now carrying wind loads they never grew to handle.
